On 4 October in Vilnius, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius received the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia Patti Londoño-Jaramillo. The meeting discussed bilateral relations between Lithuania and Colombia, and important issues in both regions. The interlocutors exchanged views on the accession of Lithuania and Colombia to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister called for the signing of two agreements that were important for further bilateral cooperation: an agreement on the transfer of sentenced persons or of persons in involuntary treatment and an agreement for the avoidance of double taxation.

“The signing of these agreements would strengthen the legal framework for our bilateral cooperation that would ensure that more attention would be paid to Lithuanian citizens and could help to build stronger business relationships,” said Lithuania’s Foreign Minister.

The Deputy Foreign Minister of Colombia headed a delegation of this country during the Lithuania-Colombia political consultations in Vilnius. Tomorrow, the Colombian delegation will visit Vilnius Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Crafts.

Colombia de jure pursued the policy of non-recognition of Lithuania’s forceful incorporation into the Soviet Union. Lithuania and Colombia established their diplomatic relations on 5 August 1993. Currently, Lithuania has not accredited its Ambassador to Colombia, but the Honorary Consul of Lithuania operates in Bogota. The Embassy of Colombia in Warsaw is accredited to Lithuania.
