Legalization

Created: 2015.05.07 / Updated: 2016.03.10 10:22

Consular legalization of documents is the official confirmation that a signature, seal or stamp on a Lithuanian public document is genuine. Legalization is usually required by foreign authorities before they will allow a Lithuanian document to be used for official purposes in their country. The same applies to a foreign document - it has to be legalized by the Lithuanian diplomatic representation or Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs before it can be used in Lithuania.

ATTENTION:

Consular legalization does not authenticate the content of the document.

The following documents are subject to legalization:

  • Civil status certificates (birth certificate, paternity verification, certificate of adoption, certificate of marriage, certificate of divorce, verification of change of family name, death certificate);
  • Company documents (incorporation agreement, certificate of incorporation, articles of association of a company);
  • Education and study documents;
  • Certificates and verification issued by companies, offices and organizations.

Other documents may also be legalized provided that their contents shall not contradict laws and international agreements.

Documents that require legalization to be submitted in Lithuania

All documents, issued in the Arab Republic of Egypt, must be legalized in order to be used in Lithuania.

Same rule applies to all documents issued in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Kuwait, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia

Legalization procedures:

  • Documents are legalized in the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Lithuanian Embassy in the country having issued the document;

  • Only owner of the document can submit a document for legalization. Passport/ID of the person submitting document must be presented.
  • Consular fee for the legalization of 1 document is 20 EUR.
  • Documents can be legalized at the Lithuanian Embassy in Cairo Monday to Thursday from 11.00 till 12.00
