IN FRANCOPHONIE DAYS IN EGYPT – INTRODUCTION TO THE LITHUANIAN ART, CULTURE AND EDUCATION

In March Lithuania for the first time along with other French-speaking and francophone countries will participate in Francophonie Day events in Egypt. Participation in Francophonie Day events to the largest population in the Middle East will promote Lithuania’s allure, its history and culture.

On March 3, the Embassy of Lithuania in Cairo attended the official press lunch where the Francophonie Days Program was presented to the national newspapers and televisions.

On 17 March, French Institute in Cairo will show a film "The Bug Trainer” screened by the movie studio “Era Film”. The film tells a story of the puppet animation pioneer Ladislas Starevičius who during the first half of the twentieth century produced films in Lithuania, Russia and France.

On 20 March, Embassy of Lithuania in Cairo will host a conference dedicated to the famous Lithuanian semiotician Algirdas Julius Greimas who worked in Alexandria city in the middle of the last century for nearly a decade. He tought history of French language at Alexandria University where his career as professor and world-renowned semiotician began.

The conference will be held in one of the most important cultural centers of Egypt – Alexandria Library. In the conference sponsored by Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alexandria Library and A. J. Greimas Semiotics and Literary Studies Research of Vinius University, various scientists from Lithuania, France and the United States will study A. J. Greimas scientific career while he was in Alexandria, his semiotic impact on Arab culture and perception of literature, Lithuanian culture, as well as his semiotic spread in France and the world.
