Legalization

Legalization

Consular legalization of documents is the official confirmation that a signature, seal or stamp on a Lithuanian public document is genuine. Legalization is usually required by foreign authorities before they will allow a Lithuanian document to be used for official purposes in their country. The same applies to a foreign document - it has to be legalized by the Lithuanian diplomatic representation or Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs before it can be used in Lithuania.

ATTENTION:

Consular legalization does not authenticate the content of the document, only the stamp.

A person (or his/her representative) submitting documents must register in advance for a visit to the Embassy of Lithuania in Cairo through the following link and only after receiving a positive confirmation can he/she come to the Embassy.

The following documents are subject to legalization:

  • Civil status certificates (birth certificate, paternity verification, certificate of adoption, certificate of marriage, certificate of divorce, verification of change of family name, death certificate);
  • Company documents (incorporation agreement, certificate of incorporation, articles of association of a company);
  • Education and study documents;
  • Certificates and verification issued by companies, offices and organizations.

Other documents may also be legalized provided that their contents shall not contradict laws and international agreements.

Documents that require legalization to be submitted in Lithuania

All documents, issued in Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon must be legalized in order to be used in Lithuania.

Documents that require legalization to be submitted in Egypt

All documents, issued in Lithuania, must be legalized in order to be used in Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon.

Legalization procedures:

  • Documents are legalized in the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Lithuania or the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in the country having issued the document.
  • Before being legalized at the Embassy of Lithuania, the documents must first be legalized by the issuing country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and vice versa: documents issued in Lithuania must first be legalized by the Embassy of Lithuania. For example: Egyptian marriage certificate, issued at the Ministry of Justice in Egypt, must be first of all legalized at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Egypt and only then at the Embassy of Lithuania in Cairo. Lithuanian marriage certificate must be first of all legalized at the Embassy of Lithuania in Cairo and only then legalized at the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Request to legalize documents at the Embassy should be done through the following webpage: Registration for consular services
  • The Embassy in Egypt accepts only original documents in Arabic (or English). The original document must be accompanied by a certified English translation (if the original is in Arabic) securely attached (sewn-in or securely stamped) to the original
  • Only the owner of a document can submit it for legalization (up to 5 documents), or it can be submitted through a representative (up to 3 documents). Passport of the person submitting documents must be presented.
  • Consular fee for the legalization of 1 document is 30 EUR.
  • Documents can be legalized at the Lithuanian Embassy in Cairo on Monday from 10.00 till 13.00.
  • Documents issued by states to which the Embassy of Lithuania in Egypt is not accredited to and with which the Republic of Lithuania has established diplomatic relations shall also be accepted at the Embassy in Egypt, provided that the following criteria are met:
  1. the foreign national providing the document is legally resident in Egypt (not less than 6 months);
  2. a citizen of a foreign country personally submits documents for himself or his close family members (husband, wife, parents, children and adopted children);
  3. the document provided was additionally legalized at the diplomatic mission of the country that issued the document, which operates in Egypt;
  4. the document to be submitted must be an original and translated to English or Lithuanian. Should the original be issued in any other language, it must be securely attached (sewn-in) to a certified English translation.
  5. If the documents submitted to the Embassy in Egypt do not meet the above criteria, they shall not be accepted. Such documents must be submitted for legalization directly to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania, in accordance with the procedure established by it – https://keliauk.urm.lt/en/consular-services/legalisation or diplomatic missions of the Republic of Lithuania, where these criteria would be met.

ATTENTION:

The Police Clearance Certificate for foreign citizens who intend to study in Lithuania is received for legalization directly from the Lithuanian educational institution at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania. In this case, the student should contact the educational institution in Lithuania, in which they plan to study, and to clarify the process of legalization of documents.
