PRIME MINISTER OF LITHUANIA MET WITH MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF THE UAE IN VILNIUS

On 18th of June Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius has met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al Nahyan, who is on his visit to Lithuania. The meeting has discussed opportunities for bilateral economic cooperation, opening of the UAE embassy in Vilnius, strengthening of the student exchange programme, and topical matters in foreign policy.   The Prime Minister has positively evaluated the bilateral relations and has stressed the necessity to make use of the possible cooperation potential: “The Lithuanian foodstuff and textile producers, information technology experts, and scientific research sectors look for new markets. We also seek to attract investment into the renewable energy resources, technologies for efficient energy use, biotechnologies, and information technology sectors”, said Prime Minister Butkevičius. According to him, the opening of the UAE embassy in Vilnius could strengthen dialogue in this respect.  

On the promotion of cooperation in higher education, the Prime Minister said that the UAE was listed among the priority states in Lithuania’s Action Plan for Internationalisation of Higher Education in 20013-2016; and medical, chemical engineering, bio-engineering, robotics, mechatronics, nursing and other university study programmes showcased at the Higher Education Fair in Dubai last year received a lot of attention from the UAE students.
The Prime Minister has invited the guest to take part in the forum “Life Sciences Baltics”, to be held in September, which is the only one of this kind in the Baltic region, convening biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical experts from all around the world.
